1992년부터 2009년까진 내 삶에 음악이란 존재하지 않았다--소음만이 전부였다. 팝 음악과의 최초의 조우는 2010년 겨울 비틀즈의 "I Saw Her Standing There"를 우연히 유튜브로 접한 것이었다. 이후론 단 한 순간도 뒤를 돌아보지 않았다. 내 삶이 얼마나 송두리째 뒤바뀌었는지, 2015년쯤 해선 난 오로지 음악 덕분에 살아 숨쉬는 것이라 봐도 무방했다. 이 시기를 전후로 하여 난 스승님 Robert Christgau께서 A MINUS 이상으로 점수를 매기신 앨범들--2021년 5월 19일 기준 총 4296개--전부를 수집하는 과업에 착수했다. 이는 단순 무식한 수집벽이 아니라, 깊이를 측량할 수 없는 팝 음악의 세계에서 내가 써먹을 수 있는 지혜와 미덕을 추출해내기 위해선 무엇보다도 검증된 음반을 추려 모으는 게 가장 실용적인 길이라 판단했기 때문이다.
애석한 일이지만 음악의 입수 가능성은 결코 음악의 품질과 정비례하지 않는다. 뛰어난 음악을 담은 수많은 앨범들이 절판된 상태로 내팽개쳐져 있어 구할 길이 마땅치 않다. 다행스럽게도 음지에서 전세계 음악 팬들의 자비로운 공유를 통해서, 여러 컴필레이션을 뒤져가며 한 곡씩 추출해다가 원본 앨범을 리버스 엔지니어링 하는 노고를 통해서, 그리고 몇 년 전부터 본격적으로 시작된 유튜브 측의 대량 음원 업로드를 통해서 많은 수의 희귀 음반을 구할 수 있었다. 하지만 아직도 적지 않은 수의 앨범들이 내 손이 닿지 않는 영역에 남아 있다. 다음에 나열할 앨범들은 현재까지 입수하지 못한 앨범들의 목록이다.
